The pistol would go on to become the choice of the Navy SEALs and remains popular with law enforcement agencies to this day. Available in 9x19, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .22 LR, the pistol owes a lot to the design of the P220. The P220 uses a single-stack magazine, while the P226 was designed for double-stack 9mm magazines in accordance with the XM9 specifications. This "wonder-nine" of the 1980s would later give rise to the P228 and P229, down-sized versions of this full-sized service weapon.
